Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, is a modern surgical technique used in various medical specialties, including gynecology. In laparoscopic surgery, small incisions (usually less than half an inch) are made in the abdomen through which specialized surgical instruments and a tiny camera called a laparoscope are inserted. The laparoscope transmits images of the inside of the abdomen to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to see and perform the surgery without the need for a large incision.

Laparoscopic surgery is commonly used for various procedures by a Gynecologist which include the following:

Hysterectomy: Removal of the uterus: Hysterectomy performed through laparoscopy involves several steps:

1. Anesthesia: The patient is given general anesthesia to ensure they are unconscious and pain-free during the surgery.

2. Insertion of instruments: Several small incisions (usually 3 to 4) are made in the abdomen. Through these incisions, specialized surgical instruments and a laparoscope (a thin, lighted tube with a camera) are inserted into the abdomen.

3. Visualization: The laparoscope transmits images of the pelvic organs to a monitor, allowing the surgeon to view the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding structures.

4. Dissection and removal: The surgeon uses the instruments to carefully dissect the tissues surrounding the uterus, including blood vessels and ligaments. Once the uterus is freed from its attachments, it is removed through one of the small incisions or sometimes morcellated (cut into smaller pieces) and removed.

5. Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue.

Recovery time after laparoscopic hysterectomy varies depending on factors such as the patient's overall health, the reason for the hysterectomy, and any complications during surgery. However, compared to traditional open hysterectomy, laparoscopic hysterectomy typically involves a shorter recovery period.

In general, patients can expect to:

  • Stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days after surgery.

  • Experience some discomfort, which can usually be managed with pain medication.

  • Resume normal activities gradually, with most patients able to return to light activities within 1 to 2 weeks.

  • Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for several weeks.

  • Follow up with their Gynecologist for post-operative care and monitoring.

Patients need to follow their Gynecologist's post-operative instructions carefully to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications.

Other procedures or surgeries which are performed through keyhole surgery/ Laparoscopic surgery are as follows:

  • Oophorectomy: Removal of one or both ovaries.

  • Myomectomy: Removal of uterine fibroids.

  • Treatment of endometriosis: Removal of endometrial tissue outside the uterus.

  • Treatment of ovarian cysts or tumors.

  • Tubal ligation: Female sterilization procedure.

Advantages of laparoscopic surgery include:

  1. Reduced trauma to surrounding tissues: Smaller incisions result in less damage to muscles, blood vessels, and nerves compared to traditional open surgery.

  2. Faster recovery: Patients typically experience less pain and require shorter hospital stays after laparoscopic surgery.

  3. Reduced risk of complications: The smaller incisions decrease the risk of infection, blood loss, and other surgical complications.

  4. Improved cosmetic outcome: Smaller scars are less noticeable and may lead to better cosmetic results.

  5. Enhanced visualization: The laparoscope provides magnified, high-definition images of the surgical site, allowing for better precision and accuracy during the procedure.

Laparoscopic surgery is also known by various other names, including keyhole surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and endoscopic surgery.
